Interpret the Codes on the Sides of Your Tires

Auto tire sizes and other tire details are marked on the sidewall of the tire in code. Assuming the mark reads P245/55R16H, the nomenclature means:

  • The first letter is the tire type. P is for passenger car.
  • The following number, "245," is the width of the tire measured in millimeters.
  • The number after the slash represents the height of the sidewall as a percentage of the tire width. In this case, the height is 55% of the tire width.
  • The "R" that follows represents the construction type. "R" stands for radial.
  • "16" represents the diameter of the wheel in inches.
  • "89" is the amount of load the tire can handle. The corresponding ratio is found on the standard tire chart which indicates a load capacity of 1,279 pounds.
  • "H" refers to maximum speed. The corresponding number on the standard tire chart shows a top speed of 130 mph.
